Caught Again: Fake Surveyor Arrested For Defrauding Homeowner

JOHNSTON COUNTY – A man with a growing record of impersonating service professionals has once again found himself behind bars—this time accused of posing as a licensed land surveyor and defrauding an elderly resident.

Cameron Elijah Hairston, 26, of NC Highway 27 West in Benson, was arrested on September 2 by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with felony obtaining property by false pretense and misdemeanor failure to work after being paid.

According to investigators, the most recent incident occurred on July 8, 2025, when a 78-year-old woman from the Cleveland community sought a surveyor for a small property project. She responded to a Facebook post allegedly made by Hairston, who presented himself as a qualified land surveyor. Authorities say she paid him $625 in cash upfront, but Hairston never returned to complete the work.

An online search confirmed that Hairston is not licensed as a land surveyor in North Carolina, according to the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

This arrest marks at least the third incident this year involving Hairston allegedly misrepresenting himself to gain access to victims’ homes and money. In May 2025, he reportedly posed as an appliance repairman on the Nextdoor app and is accused of stealing jewelry from a female homeowner. That same month, he allegedly scammed $802 from another Cleveland area resident while claiming to be a plumber.

Authorities say Hairston has previously lived in Clayton and Angier.

Following his latest arrest, Hairston was booked into the Johnston County Detention Center in Smithfield, where he is being held without bond.

The sheriff’s office is urging anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Hairston to come forward.
